Interactive Van Gogh experience at the Kröller-Müller Museum

From concept to completion

The project manager and designers at Iwaarden worked closely with the museum team to create an experience that reflects the atmosphere of the original painting. Because Café Terrace at Night is a vertical composition, the artwork was digitally extended into a horizontal format to suit the space and enhance the idea of “stepping onto the terrace”. Using AI, the painting was carefully broadened and reconstructed, a challenge, as AI-generated visuals are not immediately suitable for high-resolution production. Through detailed retouching and colour correction, our designers prepared the artwork for large-scale printing. After presenting a scale model and testing print samples, the final design was produced on seamless Airtex wallcovering and vinyl for both floor and ceiling elements. A custom-built false wall protects the museum’s original surfaces, while a rounded corner ensures a natural transition between wall, floor and ceiling.

A complete atmosphere in true Van Gogh spirit

The installation is finished with a white lacquered selfie column and an authentic French bistro set, echoing the scene depicted in the original artwork. Every element, from design and printing to construction and installation, was produced and assembled by our own team.
The result is an immersive environment in which art and contemporary production techniques come together to create a unique museum experience.
